What causes facial volume loss?

As we age, the skin naturally loses collagen and elastin, leading to a reduction in facial volume and the appearance of sagging or hollow areas.

Every face is unique, so the best approach starts with a personalised consultation. At Plumerian Aesthetics, we assess your facial structure, areas of volume loss, and aesthetic goals to create a tailored treatment plan. Treatment options may include dermal fillers or other modalities, depending on individual needs.

Yes, some facial volume concerns may be eligible for treatment with dermal filler. While we can’t mention specific product names or brands due to regulatory guidelines, dermal fillers are often used to restore volume and enhance facial contours. During your consultation, we’ll assess your concerns and determine whether this type of treatment is appropriate for you.

Dermal fillers are commonly used in the following areas of the face:

  • Lip fillers – to increase volume or adjust lip contour.
  • Cheek fillers – to address volume loss in the midface.
  • Jawline fillers – to alter the structural appearance of the lower face.
  • Temple fillers – to address hollowing in the upper face.
  • Under-eye fillers – to manage volume loss beneath the eyes.
  • Chin fillers – to modify chin projection or facial symmetry.
  • Neck fillers – to treat certain lines or areas of volume loss.

In addition to Dermal Fillers, there are several other approaches that may help address facial volume loss. These can include bio-stimulating treatments (which help encourage your body’s own collagen production), medical-grade skincare, skin tightening procedures, and lifestyle adjustments that support skin health. The most suitable option depends on the area of concern, the degree of volume loss, and your overall aesthetic goals. A consultation allows us to explore the right solution for you.

While both are injectable treatments, they serve different purposes. Botox temporarily relaxes facial muscles to reduce lines, while fillers restore volume using substances like hyaluronic acid.

  • Botulinum toxin (aka “Botox” or “Dysport”) is a prescription-only medication used to temporarily relax specific facial muscles. This can help soften the appearance of dynamic lines—such as frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet—that form from repeated facial expressions over time. While it’s commonly known by various brand names, we do not reference these due to advertising regulations. A face-to-face consultation is required to assess your concerns and determine whether this treatment is suitable for you.

  • Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are commonly used to restore volume and enhance facial contours in areas such as the cheeks, lips, and jawline. They are typically made of substances like hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in the body. Individual suitability and treatment areas are assessed during a consultation.  They are made from hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the skin.

Yes, Botulinum Toxins and Dermal Fillers often complement each other. Botox relaxes dynamic lines while Dermal Fillers restore lost volume.  So because they have different mechanisms of action, and are generally done in different areas, they are often done within the same appointment.

Injectables include neuromodulators (like Botox) and biostimulators, which act on targeted muscles or collagen pathways. They are commonly used in aesthetic medicine for the following areas:

  • Lip Injectables – to adjust lip shape or volume.
  • Chin Injectables – to alter projection or structure of the lower face.
  • Jawline Injectables – to address concerns related to jaw shape or definition.
  • Temple Injectables – to manage changes in volume over time.
  • Under-eye Injectables – to treat volume loss or structural irregularities.
  • Neck Injectables – for specific concerns relating to lines or texture.

While natural ageing can’t be stopped entirely, certain factors like sun protection, good skincare, hydration, and avoiding smoking can help preserve volume and skin quality over time. Treatments like bio-stimulants and preventative aesthetic care may also support long-term skin health.

The longevity of dermal fillers varies by area and product type, but results typically last between 9 to 18 months.

Our approach at Plumerian Aesthetics is to enhance your natural features, not change them. Our philosophy is “less is more”! Treatments are carefully planned and administered to achieve subtle, balanced results.

We generally book 45–60 minutes for your appointment. During this time, the consultation typically lasts around 20–30 minutes, allowing us to assess your facial structure, discuss your concerns, and create a tailored treatment plan.

If you choose to proceed with treatment on the same day, the procedure itself usually takes an additional 30–60 minutes, depending on the areas being addressed. We always ensure there’s ample time to provide precise, safe, and effective treatment aligned with your goals.

As with any medical procedure, there are potential side effects and risks. Common side effects after dermal filler treatment can include temporary swelling, redness, bruising, or tenderness at the injection site. These usually resolve within a few days.

Less commonly, more serious complications can occur, such as vascular occlusion or infection. This is why it’s important to choose a qualified medical professional for your treatment. At Plumerian Aesthetics, your safety is our priority—we use thorough assessment, precise technique, and evidence-based practices to minimise risks and ensure the best possible outcome.

Under-eye fillers are volume-boosting dermal fillers, often made from hyaluronic acid, designed to restore fullness and smooth out hollows or shadows under the eyes.

On the other hand, under-eye injectables include a range of treatments targeting various concerns, such as hydration, pigmentation correction, and skin rejuvenation. These can include:

  • PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) injections, which use your own blood to stimulate collagen production, which may address concerns regarding skin texture and dark under eye circles.

  • Rejuran is a skin-rejuvenating injectable containing polynucleotides that help repair damaged skin, improve elasticity, and promote a smoother, brighter under-eye area.

These injectables focus on addressing concerns about skin quality and fine lines, without adding volume like traditional fillers.

A consultation with a qualified professional is required to determine your eligibility for these treatments, as factors such as skin type, health history, and specific concerns must be considered to recommend the most suitable option.

While lip injectables and lip fillers refer to similar treatments, lip injectables can include a variety of options, such as botulinum toxin injections, which focus on reducing fine lines around the lips.

In contrast, lip fillers are specifically designed to add volume, shape, and definition to the lips, typically using hyaluronic acid to create a fuller, more sculpted look.

In summary, lip fillers focus on enhancing volume, while lip injectables can address both volume and the appearance of fine lines or wrinkles around the lips.

When performed by a trained and experienced professional, dermal fillers are generally considered safe. Like any medical procedure, there are potential risks, but these can be minimized with proper assessment, technique, and the use of high-quality, FDA-approved products. It is important to discuss any concerns with a professional before treatment. An assessment by one of the qualified nurses at Plumerian Aesthetics is required to ensure that dermal fillers are the right option for your needs and to help minimize any potential risks.

Results from dermal fillers are usually visible immediately after treatment. Some mild swelling or bruising may occur, but these effects typically subside within a few days. Final results are usually apparent after a week or two, once any initial swelling has settled.

The cost of dermal filler treatments varies depending on factors such as the type of filler used, the areas treated, and the amount of filler required. A consultation is the best way to receive an accurate estimate for your specific treatment needs. The experience of discomfort during dermal filler injections is typically minimal. Many fillers come with lidocaine (a numbing agent) to reduce discomfort, and numbing cream can also be applied beforehand. The procedure is usually well-tolerated, with any discomfort subsiding shortly after the treatment.

Yes, dermal fillers can provide a non-surgical lift by restoring volume to areas such as the cheeks, temples, and jawline.  However, other treatments, such as collagen-stimulating treatments, may provide longer-lasting effects for lifting and skin tightening. These treatments work by stimulating natural collagen production. A consultation is necessary to assess your individual needs and determine the most appropriate approach for your goals.

No, dermal fillers are temporary. The longevity of the results depends on the type of filler used and the area treated. On average, results last between 9 to 18 months before the body gradually absorbs the filler. Maintenance treatments are typically needed to sustain the results.

While Dermal Fillers can often be used safely on sensitive skin, it’s crucial to first determine your suitability for treatment. This involves a thorough consultation with a qualified professional who will assess your skin type, medical history, and aesthetic goals. Only after this evaluation will specific product choices be discussed, ensuring the most appropriate filler is selected to minimize the risk of irritation and achieve optimal results.

Dermal filler treatments are generally considered safe when administered by a trained and experienced professional. However, certain conditions may make individuals unsuitable candidates. These include active skin infections, known allergies to filler components (such as hyaluronic acid or lidocaine), pregnancy or breastfeeding, bleeding disorders, and certain autoimmune conditions. Additionally, individuals on immunosuppressive medications or with chronic medical conditions may require special consideration. It’s essential to discuss your medical history and treatment goals with a qualified professional to determine eligibility. At Plumerian Aesthetics, a thorough assessment by one of our nurses will help ensure the treatment is appropriate for you.
